Event format

Feminists in Dialogue was hosted at the University of London Union by Black Feminists, Everyday Sexism and the New Statesman. The event was co-facilitated by Femi Otitoju and Shannon Harvey. The event outline shown below is as the event was planned, although on the evening discussion continued through to 9pm.

Facilitators introduce themselves

Shannon outlines core ground rules:

  • Chatham House rules (with explanation)

  • No tweeting

  • Take time out if you need it, either Femi or Shannon will come and check on you

Each person to introduce themselves:

  • Name

  • Why they came tonight

  • Anything they’d like to add to the ground rules: What I need to feel safe to contribute tonight is…

Small group discussion: What do black feminists need in their allies?

  • Split into mixed groups of 4 (groups allocated to have a roughly even mix of Black and White women)

  • All women are given large post-its with marker pens to write notes on.

  • Facilitator writes up discussion points on flipchart paper

Small group discussion: When challenged, what do white feminists find helpful and constructive?

  • Remain in same small groups
